Biodiversity - A Landmark High Seas Treaty
There has been an upsurge in focus on how climate change is affecting the natural world since the UN COP15 summit on biodiversity, which took place in Montreal in December 2022. Businesses are faced with increasing scrutiny over the actions they are taking to protect and restore nature.
March saw the introduction of a historic landmark deal, agreed by the UN to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. Talks on the treaty have been underway for over two decades making the agreement a dramatic milestone for the biodiversity agenda. The new treaty addresses the oceans lying outside of national boundaries (around two thirds) and ensures a legal framework is adopted to establish protected areas.
